Orthopaedic corset worn on a woman (rear view). This body-cast or brace is worn in the case of damaged or broken spinal discs, or other injury to the spine. Back pain and deformity can also be treated in this way. This corset of cotton is strengthened with plaster moulded to the body shape. Two frontal zips allow it to be removed. It functions by increasing pressure on the abdomen and so takes the weight of the trunk off the lower spine. It also restricts painful movements by immobilizing and supporting the spinal column. Faulty alignment of the spine can be corrected with this equipment. It plays a secondary role of keeping the back warm.
