E. coli bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Escherichia coli bacteria, commonly known as E. coli. These rod-shaped gram- negative bacteria are normal inhabitants of the intestines of humans and other animals. While E. coli is usually harmless, under certain conditions it may increase in number and cause infection. Certain types of E. coli are responsible for gastroenteritis in children, particularly in tropical countries. In adults this bacteria is the cause of \travellers' diarrhoea\" and most urinary tract infections. Magnification: x3500 at 35mm size."
