His name was Geoffrey Chaucer, and hewas the first great English poet. He was born inLondon about 1340. As a young man he was en-gaged in the service of the court. Chaucer fought in the wars of Edward III. inFrance, and was there taken prisoner in King ransomed him, and he returned toEngland. He was sent abroad several times onmissions to Italy and other countries; so he wasa man who had seen much of the world. He satin Parliament as a member for Kent. If we did not know from his history that Chau-cer had mixed with all sorts of people, and seenmany kinds of life, we should be quite sure of itfrom his poems.
