Hantavirus infection. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of hantavirus particles (blue) bursting from a human cell. This virus causes haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). It contains ribonucleic acid (RNA) genetic material that is held inside a protein coat (capsid). Humans become infected by inhaling or ingesting excreta from infected rodents. Symptoms range from fever & muscle weakness (myalgia) to haemorrhage & cardiovascular instability, which can lead to death. Magnification unknown.
