Abusir, located near Cairo, was the main royal necropolis for 5th Dynasty (c. 2494-2345 ) Egyptian rulers. It was once home to 14 pyramids. The three shown in this illustration date to the early 1900s and belonged to, from left to right, Neferirkare, Nyuserre Ini, and Sahure. To the right, by the Nile's waters are the mortuary, or funerary, temples.
