Defeated forthe governorship of Indiana (1856), he was electedlieutenant-governor in i860, with the understandingthat Henry S. Lane, the governor, was to be sent tothe United States Senate. This arrangement wascarried out, and Morton filled the office of governorthroughout the Civil War.
