Taunton had been reduced to ruins, but its magnificentdefence had won Blake a great reputation. Little further is heardof him until 1649, when he was created Admiral and is probable that as a thriving West Country merchant he hadmade vo^ages in his youth. It has been asserted that Cromwellwas jealous of him, but the fact of Blakes naval appointment dis-credits the story, and nothing in Cromwells subsequent behaviourlends any colour to it.
