Dartmouth Lower Ferry Crossing the River Dart To Kingswear, with Detail of the Village and Slipway #2: River Dart, Kingswear, Devon, England.

Dartmouth Lower Ferry with vehicles and passengers, heading towards the Kingswear slipway on the River Dart, Devon. This image includes details of Kingswears’ hillside buildings. There are two vehicle ferries and a passenger ferry crossing the River Dart in to Dartmouth. This lower ferry runs between Kingswear, which has a busy marina and the terminal station for the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, and the popular riverside town of Dartmouth The ferry is owned and run by the South Hams District Council. The vehicles are transported on one of two pontoons powered by an attached tug boat, with both running at the busiest of times. The lower ferry tends to be the most convenient, bringing traffic in to the centre of Dartmouth. A steam ferry was brought in to service by 1867 which was powerful enough to convey a horse and cart. In 1920 the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway company sold the ferry rights to the Dartmouth Corporation.
