It appears to be the re-newal of the old chain of hills and rocks whichbounded the valley, but which, from their soft-ness of material, have been disintegrated bywind and weather. This possessing harder ma-terial has withstood these effects, although it issteadily yielding. In the days of Fremonts ex-pedition, it was estimated that it was over 200feet in height, but other travelers and explorerswho had seen it years before, stated that itsheight had been as great as 500 feet. In thosedays it was a landmark visible for forty or fiftymiles; now it is hardly 35 feet in the waist of the base runs a white band. which sets off its height, and relieves the uni-form yellow tint. It has often been struck bylightning. Tlie Overland Pony Express. The Pony Express (of which few now remem-ber those days of excitement and interest) wasstarted in ISGO, and the ;3d of April, that year, isthe memorable date of the starting of that firsttrip. In those days, the achievements of thePony Express were attended with an eager excite-ment hardly less interesting than the building ofthe Pacific Railroad itself. Overland to Califor-nia in thirteen dai/s, was repeated everywhere asa remarkable achievement.
