Thejury consi3ted of eight engineers of various Before describing the car in detail, itshould be noticed that it has not been de-signed with the idea of enabling tramwaycompanies to run regular trains in thestreets, but in order to supersede twohorses in town traffic, as the true principlehas always been that of small and frequenttrains. They are, however, powerfulenough to draw a second car after them, when desired, and as the cost of workingone of the steam cars carrying fifty passen-gers does not exceed the cost of workingone horse car, the advantages to be obtainedby their adoption are desirable. It wasbuilt at .Brussels, and great care has beentaken that all parts should be most carefullydesigned with the latest improvements, and also that the electric energy should bereduced to the lowest point. The accumu-lators which are put in this car have 20plates each and weigh about 30 lbs. Theyare divided into eight series, each compris-ing 12 elements, and the weight of thewhole battery is about 3,300 lbs. Theexperiment as tested in New York is anexceedingly interesting one and it is beingwatched by those who have the develop-ment of electricity in mind with a greatdeal of care, as well as by electricians wholook upon it as a matter of purely scientificinterest.
