Tuesday, Sept. 20, after the fireworksthe members of the 16th ArmyCorps began to assemble in theThomas tent to hold their re-union, but, although all was brightand brilliant on the outside, theinside of the tent was black asnight, owing to the fact that theelectric lights had slipped theircable. McGowan, went out upon a foragingexpedition, and soon returned with a small tallow dip,which, whe:^^ stuck upon the table, served to make a smallhole in the darkness by its feeble flickerings ; dim formscould be /liscerned in the background and eager faces ofold comrades could be seen peering through the dark-ness. There were quite a number of ladies present andalso a number of the Sons of Veterans. Chairman McGowan then opened the meeting with afew brief remarks, and stated that he had letters fromGeneral Richard J. Oglesby, General G. M. Dodge, GeneralA. J. Smith and others, regretting their inability to bepresent; and then, in a few well chosen remarks, intro-duced as the presiding officer of the meeting, the onlyold commander of the KUh Corps present in the city,General K.
