It is asmall settlement of a few hundred people, but importantas a base of supplies for a number of gold mines in theadjacent mountains and as the center of a large agricul-tural district. From this point on to San Jacinto thevalley is one vast grain field, interrupted here and thereby orchards and garden plots.
