Detail of the monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi with the city coat of arms and a bronze garland in the historic centre of Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
The coat of arms of the municipality consists of a shield with a blue cross in a gold field, surmounted by a ducal crown and surrounded by the motto: Hostis turbetur quia Parmam virgo tuetur which means "the enemies tremble because the Virgin protects Parma". The phrase was coined on the occasion of the victory of the Parmesans in 1248 over the besieging troops led by Emperor Frederick II.
