To secure a solid footingon the bedrock of the river for its piers it wasnecessary to sink to a depth iii the river bedvarying from fifteen to fifty-five feet; as theseexcavations were carried down it became neces-sary to construct coffer dams and use steam-pumps to keep the water out. During the greater]3art of the time that the bridge was in the courseof construction a force of 200 men was employedand the work was carried on night and day. Anidea of the magnitude of the bridge may \ye ob-iained from the dead weight of the structure,which is estimated at 34,000 tons. Its cost was$200,000.
