Chinese Moon Moth (Actias dubernardi) Hatching male on pine limb.
Chinese Moon Moth (Actias dubernardi) There are a number of different species that come under the umbrella common name CHINESE MOON MOTH. This is specifically Actias dubernardi and is considered to be one of the most spectacular tailed moths in the world. This male is newly emerged, hanging onto a pine limb and in the process of wing expansion and drying. The females are entirely pale green and have shorter tails. This is an example of sexual dimorphism. The species is native to China and the caterpillar is known to feed on pine trees.
