Heart of baby mammoth. The well-preserved heart of the baby woolly mammoth named \Dima\", whose frozen body was found in 1977 in the Magadan region of eastern Siberia, Russia. The muscle of the heart has been mummified, with blood vessels at the top. \"Dima\", a male mammoth, dates to about 39,000 years ago. He was between 6 and 12 months old when he died, probably by becoming stuck in mud. Scientists have chemically treated the body and conducted an extensive study of its organs, muscles, brain, heart and cells. Woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primi- genius) became extinct only a few thousand years ago, some being well-preserved in permafrost."
