Always a place of public assembly, the Plaza has been the sceneof two incidents which strikingly illustrate the curious vicissitudesof the towns history. The first of these was on that historic nightin the year 1776 when the British subjects of King George IV. as-sembled here and burned in effigy two of the signers of the Decla-ration of Independence; and the second, a hundred years later, wasthe Fourth of July gathering of St. Augustine in mass meeting onthe Plaza to applaud the reading of that Declaration.
