Shinchi. Satellite image of the town of Shinchi, Fukushima prefecture, Japan, taken two days after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. A derailed train can be seen at centre. The magnitude earthquake struck 130km off the east coast of Japan at local time ( GMT) on 11th March 2011, triggering an enormous Tsunami. It was the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan and the 5th largest in the world. Tidal waves of up to 10 metres high swept ashore, devastating areas up to 10km inland. Imaged by GeoEye's IKONOS satellite at local time, on 13th March 2011 from 680km in space.
