Exterior detail of N wall of C7th nave of Escomb Saxon (Anglian) church built of reused stones brought from Binchester Roman fort. Some of the Roman stones have a criss-cross diamond pattern (diamond broaching) & a Roman inscription reading LEG VI (Sixth Legion) has been used upside down. The church displays Irish influence in its building style and 'Celtic' circular churchyard.
