Smart motorway safety systems that are meant to detect live lane breakdowns and control the network’s CCTV and signs were unexpectedly shut down 41 times last summer, according to The Telegraph newspaper. Following numerous deaths on Smart Motorways, there are calls for hard shoulders to be put back onto Smart Motorways. The roll out of any new Smart Motorways is currently on hold.
