I r< I Oi tew Larae Woocf-iVim .A 1 chap, rx.] WOOD ENGRAVING IN EUROPE, &c. 189 I have to add to all this, that a few years ago I happened to find arepetition of the above design of the Annunciation, among theilluminations of a small MS. book of prayers in the Dutch or Flemishlanguage, which, from the general character of the costume, I judge tobe of an earlier date than the wood-print, by full thirty years; andthat, from a peculiarity in the head-dresses of some of the femalefigures, there appears no doubt that the MS. was written and deco-rated in Holland. I have caused this illumination to be carefullyengraved, of the same dimensions as the original, in the annexedplate, placing beside it, for the convenience of comparison, a reducedcopy of the wood-print. Notwithstanding this discovery, I stilladhere to the opinion, that the original invention of the piece (whichmay date, perhaps, from an early part of the fourteenth century) isItalian; and that the wood-print is
