Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-1894), British sculptor and artist. Hawkins trained as a sculptor and then studied zoology and geology. He was elected a member of the Society of Arts (1846), Fellow of the Linnean Society (1847) and Fellow of the Geological Society of London (1854). He was assistant superintendent of the Great Exhibition of 1851, leading to his design of the life-sized reconstructions of prehistoric dinosaurs and reptiles installed at Crystal Palace Park, London, UK, in 1854. They were based on 19th-century fossil discoveries and knowledge, and the reconstructions included some features later shown to be inaccurate.
