Hopton's Almshouses, Southwark Street, London. Built between 1746-9 and now surrounded by modern high-rise buildings.

Hopton's Almshouses, built between 1746-9 by Thomas Ellis and William Cooley. They are situated on Southwark Street in Bermodsey and are overshadowed by huge modern buildings. Before the days of state provision, almshouses were bequeathed by rich benefactors to the poor or to people who have served in certain lines of work and had retired. These were the generous gift from Charles Hopton and 26 residents were originally housed here.
