PORTER, David Dixon, an American admiral;born in Chester, Pennsylvania, June 8, 1813. Heentered the United Statesnavy (1829); was em-ployed on the Coast Sur-vey from 1836 to 1841,when he became lieuten-ant, and then served till1845 on the Mediter-ranean and Brazil stations,afterward returning tothe Coast Survey. From1849 to 1853 ^^ wasengaged in command ofthe California mail steam-ers. At the commence-ment of the Civil War hewas appointed com-mander of the steam-frigate Powhatan, and orderedto Pensacola; but afterward he was placed in com-mand of the mortar flotilla, joined Farragut, and in.
