Given the sameconditions in every way as the cool Odontoglossums there is nodifficulty whatever in the management of this useful, interesting,and handsome species. AERIDES These East Indian Orchids have for many years been out offashion, and it is hardly likely they will be ever grown so largelyas in the earlier years of Orchid culture. By far the largernumber of species need to be grown in a very warm house, butthere are a few which come from a higher elevation than the. .-ERIDES SUAMSSIINIUM. THE MOST USEFUL ORCHIDS 23 majority, and these can be grown successfully in the same houseas the Odontoglossums, especially if placed at the warmest end ofthe house, and there are others that require an intermediatetemperature. The Aerides have erect stems, and fleshy leaves arranged in tworows. Their appearance and their requirements are akin to thoseof the Vandas, and to the latter genus the reader is referred forfurther particulars. The method of flowering is distinct, however,and none of the Aerides have flowers as large as most of theVandas. So closely set upon the spike are the flowers of that the popular name of this species is the Fox BrushOrchid. The lip of each flower has a long, spur-like developmentthat is very characteristic. The best species for the warmest house are A. crassifolium,which has drooping spikes of fragrant, purple flowers ; A. crispum,with white and rose flowers; A. Houlletianum, buff and white,with
