Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - FREIHEIT EMSCHER urban development project. The cities of Essen and Bottrop, together with the owner RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH, want to transform former mining sites along the Rhine-Herne Canal and the Emscher River into an urban center with commerce and industry, residential areas as well as green spaces and leisure facilities on the waterfront. The so-called nucleus, consisting of the Sturmshof site (left) on the Bottrop side of the Rhine-Herne Canal and the Coelln-Neuessen port (right) on the Essen side, plays a special role in this.
