Hurricane Fran. Coloured infrared satellite image of hurricane Fran over the Caribbean Sea. The Bahamas islands (at lower left) and the coast of Florida (at far left), USA, have been outlined in green. The hurricane is the swirl of white clouds surrounding the central calm, cloud-free \eye\". Around this \"eye\" are strong winds and heavy rain. Hurricane Fran came ashore at Cape Fear in North Carolina, USA, on 5 September 1996. It had winds reaching 190 kilometres per hour, delivered 36 centimetres of rain and killed 34 people. Image taken on 4 September 1996 by an Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor aboard a NOAA satellite."
