The western bank of the Ganges River at Varanasi is lined with ghats which are used for bathing, ablution and religious ritual. In the early morning pilgrims perform puja to the rising sun. There are more than 100 ghats, each distinctive and appealing to a different activity or group. Above the ghats tower palaces, temples and other buildings.
