It owesits origin mainly to Dr. J. D. Russ, whose attention wasdirected to the sightless condition of a large number ofthe children in the City Alms House. Moved by thespectacle, he determined to devote himself to their re-lief, and for that purpose took seven children from theAlms House and gratuitously instructed them for nearlytwo years, and finally obtained the passage of an act bythe legislature for their support. In this effort he wasably supported by Samuel Wood, a well-known memberof the Society of Friends, and Dr. Samuel Akerly, dis-tinguished for his zeal and labors in behalf of the Insti-tution for the Deaf and Dumb. Here also the usualbranches of education are taught, and the pupils are in-structed in the several useful arts of life. It is an ex-ceedingly useful object to visit, as is also the Deaf andDumb Asylum. The Institution is open to visitors onweek days, from one to six p. m., and may be conven-iently reached by stages and cars that run on the Odd Fellows Hall. BENEVOLENT INSTITUTIONS. 51 THE HOUSE OF INDUSTRY AND HOME FOR THEFRIENDLESS Is located on Thirtieth street, between Fourth and Madi-son Avenues. It is under the direction of a society de-voted to the protection of deserted children, and adultpersons who may be in distress. This association haslargely contributed to the relief of the poor and desti-tute of the city,—in one year it relieved, and providedwith places, over 600 young and old. The society pub-lishes a paper semi-monthly, entitled u The Advocateand Guardian which has a circulation of about 15,000copies; it has also published over 10,000 tracts, &c.
