A low-angle view looking up most of the 91 steep limestone steps that rise to the top of El Castillo (The Castle), also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, the most famous Mayan ruin in the ancient archaeological site of Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Nearing the summit is a tourist who is climbing the 45-degree staircase of this stepped pyramid while holding onto a long metal chain for safety. Ever since a climber fell to her death in 2006, visitors are no longer allowed to ascend the 99-foot-tall (30-meter) structure. The pre-Columbian landmark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
