Aoos river, close to Konitsa town, Ioannina Prefecture, Epirus, Northern Greece

This is a photo of Aoos river, taken during a walk into the heart of beautiful Aoos Canyon, one of the most "virgin" landscapes in Greece. I was heading to Moni Stomiou an isolated monastery in the heart of the Canyon. Right beside the stone bridge of Konitsa, a narrow road continues for about a km and then you have to leave the car. There is an about 6-7 km walk till you reach the monastery. The first km you walk side by side with the river and then you start climbint the slopes in the heart of a dense forest. Total time, about 2 hours walk on the way up and about 1 1/2 hour on the way down. A few km after the exit of the canyon, Aoos meets Voidomatis river and then further on, another river called Sarandaporos, a few km before the Greek-Albanian borders. When the river crosses the borders, changes its name and becomes Vjosa in the Albanian territory. Aoos River originates from Mavrovouni mountain (part of the Northern Pindos mountain chain in Greece). It flows in NW direction through Greece and Albania and discharges into the Adriatic Sea. The total length of the river is about 260 km, with the first 80 km in Greece. The catchment has a total of 6,519 km², where the Greek sub-river basin covers approximately 2,154 mean precipitation height in the area is about 850 mm and the flow rate varies between 8 and 130 m³/s. Aoos river is considered the best river in Greece for rafting. On the route that starts from the stone bridge of Vovousa and ends at the stone bridge of Konitsa, after a few dozens of kilometres, there are continuous passages of 4th and 5th degree of difficulty. NOT a river for beginners!
