Kashmir Agriculture Department officials are concerned about the effects of encroaching urbanization on paddy fields. A government ban on the sale of paddy fields has not been strictly administered and Kashmiri farmers are still able to achieve high prices from real estate agents for paddy fields located around the Highway connecting it with the rest of India. Another reason is the increasing demand of Kashmiri apples in both Indian and international markets and the prospects of earning substantial profits from the sale of the fruit is luring the farmers convert their fields into orchards, an official in the State Agriculture Department said.©Sofi Suhail/Alamy Live News
