The waka (canoe) house holds several ceremonial war canoes (waka taua) including the largest one, Ngatokimatawhaorua. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is the place where Maori chiefs first signed their accord with the British Crown, the Treaty of Waitangi or Te Tiriti of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. The park-like grounds has views of the Bay of Islands and includes sites such as the historic Treaty House, the carved meeting house, and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe.
