Light micrograph of a cross-section of the diaphysis (shaft) of an immature bone in process of ossification. From the inside to the outside, the periosteum, in the form of an external pink line, is clearly distinguished from the cortex of immature bone tissue (plexiform or trabecular), in the form of a thick layer of interlocking and connected trabeculae forming an irregular network. The intensely stained material that remains in the centre, is bone marrow that, at this moment, is performing a very active hematopoiesis. Magnification: x18 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
