At this time the enemy opened with artillerybut owing to a heavy fog his range was imperfect and there was noinjury. Our skirmishers had now met those of the enemy, and themusketry indicated opposition to further advance. Advancing some distance the skirmishersreported a force of cavalry and infantry concealed in a piece of pinewoods skirting the river, immediately in front. The four centercompanies of the Twenty-fourth were broken to the rear and six ofBattery B*s guns planted in the space. They opened fire at once andshelled the woods. Inthe first line were the Twenty-fourth Michigan and Seventh the second line were the Nineteenth Indiana and Second Wisconsin;the two lines being supported by the Sixth Wisconsin.
