There is no system of closedblood vessels, as in the higher animals,but the blood is forced through the bodycavities by an organ which representsthe heart. This organ is a delicate tube,located in the upper surface of the body,and is usually called the dorsal represents the heart, and ordinarilyconsists of eight sections, or sacs, whichopen into each other and which, by con-tracting, drive the blood forward to theregion of the head, where it escapes intothe body cavity. No system of arteriesor veins has been traced. In its coursethrough the body, the blood becomesoxygenated by contact with the respir-atory organs, which
