Regiment. At this point the soldiers turned and dischargedtheir weapons upon those who were so nearly upon them,then wheeled and resumed their tramp. The sidewalks andcrossings were, at that hour, crowded with pedestrians, ofall ages and descriptions, and both sexes, and the volle}^ ofmusketry caused the utmost consternation. Children ranand screamed. Women screamed and fainted, and menfound occasion to get out of the way most ungracefully andquickly. At the corner of Frederick and Baltimore Streets anotherscattering discharge of musketry came, and after that thecrowd of rioters perceptibly diminished, and men andwomen again ran and scattered in every direction possible—excepting towards the soldiers. Horses were frightened,broke from their fastenino-s, and ran, drao^o-ino^ shatteredvehicles after them, thus adding to the prevalent women and children shrieked, and the panting mobhowled hoars
