General Lyon was born at Ashford, Conn., July 14th 1819; wasgraduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, andentered the army July, 1841 ; took part in the Indian campaign inFlorida; was sent to Mexico at the commencement of the war, andwas wounded at the Belen Gate ; was appointed captain in 1851, andremained in active frontier duty in Kansas until in April, 1861, he wasplaced in charge of the United States Arsenal at St. Louis, Mo., andafterward appointed commandant of the post. In May, 1861, he en-rolled a large number of volunteers and surrounded Camp Jackson, com-pelling a prompt surrender. He was killed at the battle of Wilsons Creek.
