Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of grasshopper thorax exoskeleton surface. The differential grasshopper (Melanoplus differentialis) is a species of grasshopper in the subfamily Melanoplinae. It found throughout the United States, northern Mexico and southern Ontario (Canada). It is considered a pest (agricultural) in most of its range. Its habitat was originally restricted to tall herbaceous vegetation growing in wet meadows, swales, and creek bottom lands. But the species spread into the weedy vegetation of crop borders, roadsides, and reversions brought about by settlement and agricultural development. The young feed on various grains, alfalfa and hay crops. The he adults attack the corn, cotton and deciduous fruit crops. A single grasshopper swarm can destroy a young crop in a few days. It can be a serious threat to farming in most of its habitat range. Magnification: x385 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
