Distillation apparatus. Chemist wearing safety glasses with apparatus for distillation, a method of separating chemicals out from a liquid mixture by heating them. Here a chemical solution drops from a burette (upper left) down into another solution in a flask. They react in the flask to form new products. The flask is heated by a hot-plate, evaporating volatile reaction products. These pass along a tube which is cooled by water flowing in a tube around it. The cooled vapours condense and drip into a flask at lower right.
