He served as a member of the NewHampshire legislature, was register of pro-bate, and filled other impoitant public posi-tions. He died Jan. 23, 1901, in his eighty-seventh year. Prank H. was born October8, 1849, at Newport, N. H. He attended thecommon schools of that town, and preparedfor college at Kimball Union Academy, atMeridan, N. H., where he graduated in June,1868. He then entered Dartmouth Collegeand there completed the course with the classof 1872. At ditferent times during his aca-demic and college days he was engaged inteaching, and, in 1870, was principal of anacademy in Mississippi. For some monthsafter graduation Mr. Carleton served as cityeditor of the Manchester Daily Union. Hethen came to
