Blue sky portrait web-pattern suspension cables, American Flag flying top masonry tower dated 1875, Brooklyn Bridge, New York

The Brooklyn Bridge, built 1870-1883, is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the USA and the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1903. An icon of New York City, it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972. The limestone, granite Neo-Gothic support towers are 84m (276 ft) tall. An open truss structure supports the deck. Diagonal cables from the towers to the deck stiffen the bridge, helping to make it six-times stronger than it need be. Streetcars stopped running in 1950, when the bridge was re-built to carry six lanes of cars, with an elevated centre-line walkway for pedestrians and bicycles. The bridge has a width of 26m (85ft), a main span length of (), and mid-span river clearance of 41m (135ft). A $725 million project to repaint and renovate the bridge began in 2009. Viewed from the pedestrian walkway the bridge's cable arrangement forms a distinct web-like pattern.
