Inflamed pancreas, coloured frontal X-ray. The pancreas (red) has been revealed by the injection of a radio-opaque dye. The bones (white) of the spine (down centre) and the lower ribs are also seen. An inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis) can be caused by alcohol abuse, gallstones, injury and drugs. It can cause a sudden sharp pain in the upper abdomen, followed by nausea and vomiting. The pain is treated with painkillers, and drugs may be needed to help restore pancreatic function. The pancreas is a large gland found behind and below the stomach. It secretes digestive enzymes and the hormones insulin and glucagon that help to control blood sugar levels.
