An immense concourse of Tyroleans followed the removal ofhis remains to the tomb, over which the statue represented in our engravinghas been erected. It is of pure white Carrara marble, is eight feet high, andstands on a block of white marble, also about eight feet high. This simple andnoble statue of Hofer heightens in no small degree the sublime effect producedupon a visiter to the cathedral of the Holy Cross, the unrivalled mausoleumin which his remains repose. The death of Hofers widow occurred as recently as 1836. She was in herseventy-second year: she had lived in retirement with her daughters fiom thetime of her husbands execution. 464 JOHN QUINCY JOHN QUINCY ADAMS.
