Burpee, Superintendent Since 1912, Promoted—A Pioneer in the Canadian Traction Field F. D. Burpee, whose appointment asmanager of the Ottawa (Ont.) ElectricRailway was noted briefly in the Elec-tric Railway Journal for May 29, is apioneer in the field of electric trac-tion in Canada. Mr. Burpee becameconnected with the Ottawa Companysoon after that system, the first elec-tric railway in Canada, was has kept pace with the develop-ment of new ideas in the industry andis a strong advocate of the service-at-cost plan of operation. He is now forty-four years old. Mr. Burpee began his railroad careerwith the Canadian Pacific Railway in1891. Two years later he entered theemploy of the Ottawa Electric the following five years he workedin various departments and in 1898 wasappointed assistant to the superin-tendent and secretary-treasurer. In1912 he succeeded Col. J. E. Hutche-. F. D. BURPEE son as superintendent. He occupiedthat position until February, 1916when he enlisted for overseas duty withthe Canadian Expeditionary Forces. The vicissitudes of war finally landedhim with the Railway ConstructionTroops in France, where he was en-gaged for two years on the BritishFront in the construction of naiTow andstandard gage railways. He returnedto Canada in March, 1919, and retiredwith the rank of Major. Upon his re-turn to civil life he resumed his formerduties -with the Ottawa Electric Rail-way, continuing as superintendent un-til his recent advancement to the posi-tion of manager. He is succeeded assuperintendent by A. J. Tobin. Arthur F. Allyn has been appointedchief engineer of Detroit power stationsof the Detroit (Mich.) United Allyn succeeds Alexander , resigned. Mr. AIIjti was firstemployed by the company in 1901 asengineer at the Farmington power sta-tion. Later he was made chief engineerof that station. / M
