At an early age, followed the sea and visited all portionsof the globe, finally settling in California in the spring of i86_. From Cali-fornia he went to Virginia City, Nevada, and from there came to Silver City,Idaho, April 7, 1865. Was steward for More & Fogus for about a year, andtlien started a poultry ranch, and operated in mines with good success. Ini<S73 he made a trip to Europe, married there and returned to Silver City. In1882 he purcliased the Owyhee Exchange building at Silver City, moved it toOreana, and opened it tlure as the Oreana hotel,
