A high degree of interest rests upon this re- |\ gion, on account of the ruins scattered over its \^ surface. At various places there are extensive re- ^\ mains of cities and edifices, now encumbered with ^^ vegetation, or buried beneath the soil. At Uxmal, ^\ there are edifices, the walls of which are still stand- \V ing, indicating a high degree of art. \\ 9. Among the objects carved in stone, and found \\ in the heaps of ruins, are busts of human beings, \N heads of leopards, groups of leaves and flowers, and ^^ various other works, all indicating considerable \\ taste and skill.
