John Kayser, a German immigrant, was commissioned a 1st Lt. in the 12th Missouri Volunteer Infantry November 16, 1861 and was promoted to Captain in the same unit on October 4, 1862. The following July he was detailed as a Commissary of Substinance officer before he resigned from the army in May 1865 (John G. Kayser Papers, MHS archives).
