Show by pouring the same amount of water or other liquid into different vessels that the shape of the water depends upon the shape of the vessel. Collect a bottle of ordinar}' gas, and use it to show that a gas has no surface and spreads itself through as much space as it can. The following is a way to do this :— Fill a bottle with water, and invert it in a basin of water; then displace the liquid with gas led from a jet by a piece. Fig. 4.—Gas is issuing from the tube and bubbling up through the water in the bottle. of india-rubber tubing (Fig. 4). Now insert a cork into the neck of the bottle while it is still under water, or cover the mouth with a glass plate, and lift the bottle out of the water and place it on the table. The gas has the size and shape of the bottle. Open the bottle and wave it about; you immediately notice.
