Barbara Frietchie (died 1864) lived close to a bridge that spans the stream in Frederick, Maryland. When Stonewall Jackson marched through Frederick in September 1862, his troops passed over the bridge. He had been told that many Union flags were flying in the city, and he gave orders for all to be taken down. Frietchie's was displayed from one of the dormer windows in her house (the sketch here by American historian Benson J. Lossing was made in September 1866). Frietchie refused, but the flag was pulled down. American poet John Greenleaf Whittier commemorated her patriotism in his poem titled Barbara Frietchie.
